The Sun’s Stephen O’Meara once dreamed of playing for Liverpool,
but finally made his Premiership debut at St James’s Park when Newcastle
United took on Chelsea.
’I went on to the pitch just before kick-off to present a cheque for
pounds 10,000 to Newcastle chairman Sir John Hall for the team’s
disabled supporters’ association,’ O’Meara explains. ’It was announced
over the tannoy and a big cheer went up. The sponsor Bic had flown us to
Newcastle and we had lunch with Sir John and Kevin Keegan. Later, Sir
John and I embraced in celebration of Newcastle’s winning goal, but
Chelsea fan John Palmer, from ad agency Buckfield Lord, was noticeably
more restrained.’
