AOL Europe names chief executive

- America Online and Germany's Bertelsmann have named a new president and chief executive for their joint venture online service, AOL Bertelsmann Europe.

Andreas Schmidt, joins from magazine publisher 'am Fleetrand', which is a part of Gruner + Jahr, another division of Bertelsmann. He was most recently managing director there.

He succeeds Heinz Wermelinger, who is assuming responsibility for Bertelsmann Online E-Commerce Business, the new international electronic commerce arm of Bertelsmann.

The joint venture between AOL and Bertelsmann is currently the largest European online service provider, with more than 2.2 million AOL and CompuServe members.
