Asda shows green credentials with award sponsorship

LONDON - Asda has signed up as sponsor of the best packaging design at the inaugural Green Awards, which will recognise excellence in sustainable marketing communications.

The packaging design award is one of 12 that will be up for grabs at the ceremony, which is being organised by Satellite Marketing Communications.

Asda has been making changes to improve its green credentials, including a decision to stop sending waste from its stores to landfill sites by 2010 and to recycle, reuse or compost waste instead.

It is also reviewing its own-label packaging with the aim of cutting down the weight and volume by at least 10%.

David Cheesewright, Asda's chief operating officer, said: "Packaging is an essential part of retailing, but we all know we should use less of it and anything we do use should be easy to recycle or reuse and should come from renewable and sustainable sources.

"These awards will showcase the very best examples of innovative packaging, demonstrating how a creative use of materials can dramatically minimise their impact on the environment."

The Green Awards will be held at the Guildhall in London on November 29.
