- German publisher Axel Springer, which last year was in acquisition talks with Mirror Group, has begun its long expected move into the UK with the announcement that it is to set up a television and publishing operation in London.

It has established a new company, Axel Springer International, that will focus on expanding its parent's print operations globally, while its sister TV company will co-ordinate global television marketing and production.

However, despite its move into the UK it is not thought Springer is interested in re-entering the bidding for Mirror Group. Talks between the two companies went on throughout last Spring but finally broke down in the Summer.

The publising unit will be headed up by Colin Morrison, the former chief executive of Australian Consolidated Press, while Stephen Barden, who has been working as a consultant to Axel Springer, will become managing director of the new TV unit.
