M&As: Exchange Lab founders make millions in sale to Group M

The founders of The Exchange Lab are set to make multi-million pound fortunes after selling their programmatic marketing company to WPP's Group M, Campaign's Gideon Spanier writes.

The sale price was undisclosed but revenues last year doubled to £21.4 million, according to Companies House. Typically, such a company is valued at one or two times annual revenues.

This is Group M’s second acquisition of a leading London digital marketing business after buying Essence last month.

WPP said The Exchange Lab will operate as "an agnostic business layer" within Connect, Group M’s worldwide digital organization bringing together data, operations and technology across search, programmatic, social, mobile and all other real time and biddable media.

Latest ads: BA creates feel good ad for Christmas evening slump

British Airways has created a new TV ad, to launch as post-Christmas gloom hits the nation which they estimate to be between 9.30pm and 10.30pm on Christmas Day, Campaign's Harriet Brown writes.

The ad, which was created by Bartle Bogle Hegarty, will air during the final ever episode of Downton Abbey on ITV on Christmas Day. Last year the Downton Abbey Christmas special was watched by 5.52 million people.

Last year we saw a massive 63% increase in views to BA.com during the same period on Christmas Day so we were keen to snap up this key advertising slot for the third year running.

Matt Armstrong, the head of marketing and distribution for British Airways Holidays

The ad was created by Tom Drew and Uche Ezugwu, and directed by Conkerco through Academy Films. The media planning and buying was handled by Carat.

Well played, insurance: Two rather excellent marketing stunts

The insurance sector is on a one day hot streak, with two stunts that had 18:05 chuckling into their coffee.

Marketing's Ben Bold reports on Comparethemarket.com's Star Wars themed insurance quote engine, the Glactic Insurance platform. Questions range from "Is your vehicle fitted with a cloaking device?" and "What do you use your Star Wars vehicle for?" The latter features an option menu that includes a clickable stormtrooper icon for "Merciless crushing of the Resistance"; while answers to "Where do you keep your vehicle at night?" include "On the street" and "In a Star Destroyer".

Marketing's Shona Ghosh writes that Direct Line is offering "free turkey protection" against burnt, dropped, dry and undercooked birds, to anyone signing up at www.directlineturkeyfix.com, and will hand out replacement birds to claimants suffering kitchen disasters.

Customers can also request replacement birds via Twitter or over the phone on Christmas Day, with a "limited" number of replacement turkeys being roasted by professional chefs in South London. Claimants will need to be located within three miles of South London, and Direct Line will only hand out one replacement turkey per person.
