Barb viewing stats join the PVR age

Barb has updated its service in an attempt to keep up with the changes in viewing caused by the expansion of personal video recorders such as Sky+.

The TV audience measurement body has reviewed its "overnights" service, which only covers live viewing, and will now include data on viewing that was recorded and then watched on the same day.

This means that when a viewer decides to play back a drama on the same day as it is screened, this viewing will be included in the overnight ratings for that drama.

Barb plans for this data to be made available to agencies and broadcasters before the end of the year.

Bjarne Thelin, the chief executive of Barb, said: "We are currently working with data processors to help determine the best means of delivering this service, and hope it will become available in the third quarter of this year."
