- Italian pasta firm Barilla pulled its $90 million (£54 million) global account from Grey International following a row involving Grey's Turkish office.
According to John Shannon, president of Grey International, Barilla fired Grey because Cenajans/Grey, Istanbul, advised another client on an ad that Barilla claimed attacked Italian pasta.
The offending ad was created by Turkish mobile phone network, Telsim, as part of a campaign to get the Italian government to deport a Turkish radical.
It showed a single drop of blood dripping down toward a plate of pasta, with the slogan, "Keep your pasta clean!". Italian TV stations refused to air the ad.
Grey handled Barilla in North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific out of its New York office and co-ordinated Europe through its Dusseldorf office. Young & Rubicam, Milan, holds the Barilla business in Italy, the company's biggest market.
