Instead BBC Worldwide, of which Beeb.com is a part, will seek to form commercial alliances to help grow its internet business.

Rupert Gavin, BBC Worldwide chief executive, said: "It has been known for some time that we have been seeking a minority partner for our commercial internet business. But there is no question of selling off any of BBC Worldwide itself."

The BBC is understood to be in the advanced stages of talks with UK and US companies about forming a joint venture to exploit Beeb.com, which includes such web properties as Top Gear, Holiday, and Gardeners' World.
