- The BBC is setting up a new commercial subsidiary called BBC Technology, as it moves to boost income by providing IT services to the BBC and other companies.

BBC Technology will be a wholly-owned subsidiary, which could be floated or sold, although there are no plans for such action yet. With a staff of about 1,300, the new unit will launch in October. It is expected to deliver between £150 million and £200 million in extra revenue over the next six years.

The decision to create the new unit follows the Government's demand earlier this year that the BBC should raise revenue by £1.1 billion.
