Booth Lockett Makin has filled the gap left by the departure of media director Ian Clarke to News International this week, by poaching Paul van Barthold, MediaCom TMB’s commercial director. Van Barthold, who arrives at BLM after a year of growth and diversification for the agency, will take the newly created role of managing director.
“BLM is expanding as we look to provide a greater breadth and depth of services to clients centred around media, and our view is that we need to broaden the management of the agency as well as recruiting more people,” said founding partner Steve Booth.
Van Barthold will be in charge of the general management of BLM, a role that was shared between Clarke, strategic planning director Graham Hawkey-Smith and broadcast director Pedro Avery.
“I will focus on new business and the commercial side, as well as the day-to-day running of the agency, which will free up Pedro and Graham to concentrate on their skills,” said van Barthold. He will also work closely with the company’s three founding partners, Booth, Nick Lockett and Charlie Makin.
Clarke left to take up a post as director of advertising at News Group Newspapers. Booth said: “Losing Ian allowed us to reassess our needs; rather than looking for a straight replacement we upstaged the role.”
The agency has a series of projects under development as a result of its expanding European affiliate network and via its Leap Communications media consultancy.
“Clients increasingly want their marketing efforts to be driven from the media,” said Booth. “We want to be best placed to deliver all the resources the client may need.”
