THE BOOK OF LISTS: The 10 Best New-Business Directors

1. NICOLA MENDELSOHN

A Bartle Bogle Hegarty lifer, Mendelsohn has been running new business at the agency for four years. BBH's presence on most of the year's key shortlists, from Orange to Sony, and her down-to-earth, unflappable nature have earned her the top slot.

2. ALEX KUROPATWA

DLKW's new-business performance over the past year speaks for itself. With Vauxhall and Burger King among its new clients, the ruthlessly efficient Kuropatwa has played no small part in changing the shape of DLKW over 2002.

3. NEIL CHRISTIE

Partners BDDH dominated the new-business performance league for most of the year, in no small part because of the dynamism of the 40-year-old Scot. Wins included BMI and the Evening Standard. His ambition should earn him a bigger role in the coming months.

4. MARCUS BROWN

Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R's Brown, whose catchword is "great!", has bucket loads of energy and enthusiasm. This combined with a maniacal attention to detail makes him unforgettable and unstoppable.

5. JUDY MITCHEM

M&C Saatchi's Mitchem's combination of drive and shamelessness have really put her on the new-business map. Marketing directors around the nation were pleased to hear she was going off on maternity leave so they could have a break from her relentless solicitations.

6. SARAH GOLD

She handled new business at Lowe but her move to Clemmow Hornby Inge, where she shares new business responsibility with Johnny Hornby, should see her unique combination of humility and doggedness put to good use. Gold's ambition has been unleashed since her departure from Lowe, so expect to hear her squeaky voice and see her tiny frame around town in the near future.

7. JULIAN HOUGH

WCRS's Hough should take credit for making sure the agency was on the year's good lists and also snaring some of the few interesting domestic accounts, such as Nectar and Pret A Manger, that were available.

8. LUCY BRYN DAVIES

Adland's most Sloaney new-business director has her own approach to the job. Like Hough, she has assured Publicis a place on the bigger domestic pitchlists, this year netting Velvet, the Army, Ferrero and Sanex.

9. CHRISTIAN HINCHCLIFFE

A rising star in new business, Hinchcliffe, 29, is looking to prove himself. That hunger, combined with an exceptional golfing talent to impress potential clients, is likely see him take Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper forward.

10. DAVID MUIR

Recently returned from a sabbatical at the London Business School, Muir has the brains, intuition and drive to advance any agency, even the struggling Ogilvy Group.
