BP is selling 5,000 petrol stations in a bid to raise the cash it needs to see through its rebranding strategy.

It claimed it will raise £1bn from the sale of the worldwide forecourts to rival companies, and will pour the cash into dropping the familiar BP shield for its new sun logo and the Beyond Petroleum strapline.

In July BP said the four-year rebranding programme would cost $100m each year, on top of the $7m brand research and development fees.
