BR Video: BT's deal on Sky Sports piques consumer interest

With BT undercutting Sky on the cost of subscriptions to Sky Sports 1 and 2 from start of the new football season, we asked the public whether they are considering switching, and if Sky offers good value.

After regulatory intervention lowered the amount other providers pay Sky to be able to sell their customers Sky Sports 1 and 2, BT Vision is offering the two channels for £16.99 per month, compared to Sky's £29 charge.

We asked people whether this would make them likely to switch from Sky to BT. The reactions demonstrated not just the lure of lower prices, but also the complexity of decision-making around changing pay-TV, broadband and telecoms providers.

Becky, 21, a childcare worker said: "It sounds like a very good deal and it's worth the money."

Student Shaun, 24, said: "Sky is a rip-off.  Now there's a bit more competition.  To encourage competition and just value for money, I suppose I would consider getting BT Vision."

Retail manager Paul said he would switch if BT had a good package deal: "If they can do a better deal than Sky, then yes I would.

Joan, a 64-year-old tribunal clerk wouldn't switch.  "We just got a good deal, actually, from Sky because we were going to change to Virgin actually."

"It's too much of a hassle basically," said Kara, a marketing manager who had just moved house and didn't want to switch providers and have to get everything set up again.

Dennis, a 25-year-old youth worker said: "If I had a choice between Sky and BT, I'd definitely go with BT. It's cheaper. Simple as that."

Asked if Sky offers good value, most said no, and wanted more competition in the market.

Dennis said, "At this moment in time, no, because BT is cheaper. It's really as simple as that. It's not offering a good price. I suppose eventually they'll have to lower their prices which is good for the consumers."

Adam, a firefighter said, "I'm happy with [Sky] so far."

"No, not at all," said Shaun.  "They use their financial clout to push out the opposition and to monopolize the situation and to overcharge people for services and content they provide."

Project manager Claire said: "I think Rupert Murdoch's got too much power. I think if you're that much of a market leader, you've got a monopoly. You can't be giving value for money. You need competition."
