Brand Manager of the Week: Veryan Eperon

Head of marketing, Stella & Dot

What would you be if you weren't doing this?

I would be an interior designer. No question. I am always trying to redecorate my house, much to my partner's annoyance. I'd love to be able to do that for someone else and let my imagination go wild.

What advice would you give someone starting their marketing career?

I was once told not to think about the current role you are in, but about the one after that you will be aiming for.

I think it's really important not to be frustrated by starting at the bottom – everyone does. Everything you learn in the early years helps to build your roundedness as a marketer, and it's funny how often later you refer back to projects and ideas from years before. It's all worthwhile and part of the ride – it's never a waste of time.

What was your first job?

I joined L'Oréal as an intern after graduating from university and then went on to the marketing graduate scheme where I worked in sales, marketing and market research.

What was your finest hour?

Practising what we preach and holding my first Stella & Dot trunk show. Having loved the concept and the business model from the start, it was amazing to hold my first (of many) trunk shows. I experienced the first-night nerves and anticipation just like all our stylists, but ended up loving every second. Seeing the reaction to the jewellery and all these women having such a great time gave me such a high. I still do regular trunk shows as it's a great extra bit of income and so much fun.

What is your favourite marketing campaign?

I am a real sucker for anything that empowers women. I have always thought Nike and Dove have both done a fantastic job of making us reassess how we see women – their strength and their beauty respectively.

What is your all-time favourite slogan?

'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger' or 'Blondes have more fun?' I have to say that as a natural blonde.

What is your favourite pub?

The White Hart in Barnes – it's opposite my house, so perfect for lazy weekend drinks with friends.
