C4 racks up 4.1m for final episode of Sex and the City

LONDON - Channel 4 racked up at least 4.1m viewers for the final episode of 'Sex and the City', but the final total might have been much higher.

The final episode of 'Sex and the City' ran on Channel 4 on Friday evening with an hour-long special preceded by a tribute to the show that lasted six seasons and 94 episodes, and won six Emmy awards and eight Golden Globes.

Although an average of 4.1m viewers watched the show, representing 26.8% of the public, hitting a peak of 4.5m halfway through the show, it might have been higher as thirty-something women came together around the company for 'Sex and the City' parties.

According to Channel 4 an average of 2.9m viewers had watched the final series of the hit US show where it airs on pay cable network HBO.

'Sex and the City' was the most watched show in one-hour slot, beating BBC One's 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' among others.

Although the outcome of the final episode was a closely guarded secret, coverage of the US screening of the final episode on February 22 had already seen details of the plot leak across the Atlantic.

The show ended with Carrie Bradshaw reunited with her true love Mr Big, whose name viewers finally found out was John.

The episode also wrapped up the lives of Carrie's three friends Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda.

Series executive Michael Patrick is reported to be in talks with the show's cast and the HBO network about making a film of the series.

'Sex and the City' girls will not disappear from screens as the programme is due to be repeated on Wednesday night on Channel 4.

Channel 4 will now be looking to the final episode of 'Friends', which is expected to easily outstrip the numbers attracted by 'Sex and the City'.
