- Cable & Wireless Communications has announced it is to launch an interactive digital television service.

Based on Internet technology the 'TV Mall' service will allow customers access via their TVs to a range of home shopping, banking and other interactive services. It will form part of CWC's planned 200 digital TV service, which is to be launched next year.

CWC has already signed deals with British Airways, Barclays Bank, Littlewoods Home Shopping Group, Granada Media Group, Associated New Media and ITN to develop specific interactive services on its platform, and is in discussions with a range of other high-street retailers and leading consumer service companies.

The announcement sees CWC move ahead of rival British Interactive Broadcasting, a venture owned by BT, BSkyB, Midland Bank and Matsushita Electric.

BIB plans to provide similar services to CWC on Sky's 140 channel digital TV service.
