The acclaimed director, Anthea Benton, formerly one half of the
directing duo, Vaughan and Anthea, has quit Rose Hackney Barber to join
the new production company, Concrete.
Concrete, launched by James Bradley, the former managing director of
Redwing, opened its doors for business earlier this month (Campaign, 3
Benton began her commercials career as a freelance art director but
began to direct with Vaughan Arnell in the mid-80s. In 1991, the duo
joined Lewin & Watson, where they rapidly became one of the top
directing duos in Europe. Their greatest accolade during this period was
for the Levi’s ’creek’ ad, which won the best cinema commercial and the
best TV commercial over 60 seconds awards at D&AD in 1994.
The pair left Lewin & Watson to establish Federation with the producer,
Adam Saward, in 1995 but the venture folded after a year. The duo split
in June 1996.
Joining Concrete marks Benton’s return to full-time directing after
taking a break to have a child. Her most recent ad is Ogilvy & Mather’s
Ford Ka ’shoes’ ad.
’Working as a solo director is enormously different but positive,’
Benton said. ’It feels like a new beginning, which is why it’s important
to me to be with a new company with someone like James, who has enormous
vitality and enthusiasm for the business.’
