Jarvis Cocker chose Doug Nichol to direct the latest Pulp video,
This is Hardcore, and Grey Advertising recently hired him for a new (and
still secret) perfume ad. Interest in Nichol, who is represented in
London by Partizan Midi Minuit, seems to come from all quarters.
For a young American director who has been making commercials for less
than three years, Nichol is treated as a true ’grown-up’ by advertising
His reel is free of the usual test films and boasts a solid list of top
clients: Kronenbourg 1664 for Young & Rubicam, a Hugo Boss fragrance
launch and a spot for La Poste are showcased, while other credits
include Mastercard, British Midland, Rover and Bailey’s.
Although he now lives in London and Paris, Nichol was born in Los
Angeles and studied film at the University of Southern California. While
there, he worked on several Steven Spielberg films as a documentary
cameraman, and as soon as he graduated he formed a production company at
Universal Studios where he made documentaries and music videos.
Nichols has an impressive rock’n’roll background. He won a Grammy Award
for his film of Sting’s Ten Summoners Tales in 1994, made a
feature-length film of a Lenny Kravitz world tour, and was the director
of photography on the popumentary, In Bed With Madonna.
Altogether, he has directed more than 50 music videos including a very
strange creation for Aerosmith’s Pink.
