Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO’s group chief executive, Michael Baulk, is
an avid collector of rock and movie memorabilia and he was very
interested to discover that many of Marilyn Monroe’s belongings were
going to be auctioned off in New York last week.
He heard about the auction in September when the pieces went on show in
London but knew that his work commitments would stop him from taking
part. Until, that is, a senior management meeting was rescheduled for
New York and fell on the same day as Baulk’s birthday - 27 October.
He says: ’I was in New York for the meeting and, as it was my birthday,
I thought I’d treat myself.’
Baulk bid for a call-sheet for The Misfits, which also included notes
that Monroe made while waiting for her part to be filmed. Unable to
attend the auction, he placed a bid with the auctioneers, Christie’s in
New York, which was successful.
Baulk would not divulge how much the call-sheet cost. However, a script
for Some Like It Hot was sold for pounds 30,000.
