Bitch all you like about your rivals' Christmas ads but its got to be better than the Greggs promotion, and raise a glass to Victoria Fox

It might be easy and smart to claim to be bored of Christmas advertising but it serves us with a reminder of how important advertising is to the wider world – and that’s something to be proud. And compare it to the festive efforts of PR company Taylor Herring, which has come up with an advent calendar for client Greggs. Behind each door is a tear-off token that can be taken into a Greggs store and exchanged for something from its menu. Like a sausage roll. Or an egg mayonnaise sandwich. The promotional image also featured a picture of a sausage roll in a manger in place of Jesus. How very Christmassy!

Victoria Fox, the gregarious and fun chief executive of Lida, was a guest on Radio 4’s Analysis in the week discussing with Professor Rosie Campbell how we make judgments about the authenticity of politicians. In the piece, Fox drew on her own experience and revealed that she wasn’t a massive fan of networking (who knew?), despite it being a prerequisite for a job. Her solution? Downing a glass of wine to get some Dutch courage, and getting on with it. Well, we’ll have some of what she’s been drinking.

The ITV Gala at the London Palladium turned into a Zenith reunion. Turns out Charlotte Hawkins, a presenter on ITV's Good Morning Britain, worked at the media agency in the 1990s with the equally photogenic Rachel Forde, who is now chief executive of Zenith's sister agency Spark Foundry. Could Hawkins be an under-used asset by ITV Commercial in their negotiations with media agencies during the upfronts trading season?
