Campaign Diary: Hammersmith Bridge: tale of woe continues

Following our piece on the chaos caused to the media community by the closure of Hammersmith Bridge (Diary, 7 February), we bring you the tale of Andrew Robertson and his moped.

Following our piece on the chaos caused to the media community by

the closure of Hammersmith Bridge (Diary, 7 February), we bring you the

tale of Andrew Robertson and his moped.

When faced with the prospect of an impossible commute for the next year,

the ever-resourceful Robertson (he didn’t get where he is today without

being flexible, versatile, game for a laugh, etc) went out and bought a

50cc Piaggio, plumped for a funky yellow helmet and rounded off the

outfit with a set of waterproofs.

Robertson claims he was ’shaking like a jelly’ the day of his first ride

into the office.

’It was terrifying. Cars just don’t realise how vulnerable you are. They

don’t look at you, they cut you up, they...’ he protested.

Strangely enough, according to insurance companies, it’s Volvos that are

involved in more accidents with motorbikes and scooters than any other

cars.
