It was good to see Chas Bayfield, a creative at HHCL & Partners,
bopping with pop king Leo Sayer at the Groucho Club recently.
Sayer’s music publisher, Rondor Music, threw the bash to introduce
favoured advertising folk to artists such as Sayer, Joan Armatrading and
the producer, William Orbit.
Sadly, the timing of the party -clashing with Bates Dorland’s Christmas
do - meant that Jay Pond-Jones, Bates’s creative director and a self-
confessed Sayer fan, couldn’t make it.
Perhaps Rondor really wanted to make friends with adfolk but, if we were
cynical, we might think the real intention was to cash in on possible
revenue from ads.
Anyway, the pint-sized Sayer provided top entertainment, belting out
hits such as When I Need You and You Make me Feel Like Dancing. Funny
how everyone seemed to know the lyrics.
Sayer also chatted about his advertising past. Before he became a star,
he worked for a few agencies as a freelance graphic artist. That was
before he changed his name - so some older adfolk won’t remember him
Or, at least, will claim not to.
Bayfield looked like he was enjoying himself so much that we wouldn’t be
surprised to hear a Sayer track on a HHCL ad soon.
You have been warned.
