At last week’s D&AD Student Awards a well-known and loved figure

received an award for his services to the industry.

Tony Daffern, the ex-Liverpool Polytechnic and ex-Staffordshire College

of Art lecturer, received a special D&AD award for services to the

industry and was stunned when more than 100 ex-students trooped on to

the stage when he was presented with his award by his ex-pupil, Alfredo

Marcantonio, of Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO. Daffern taught advertising

talent such as Mitch Walker and Geoff Turner at J. Walter Thompson, Mike

Durban and Trevor Kennedy (AMV), Ashley Jouhar (McCann-Erickson), Kate

Stanners (St Luke’s), Phil Ryland (DMB&B), Chris Hodgkiss (TBWA), Kiki

Kendrick, Mark Riley and Martin Lorraine (Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper).

Daffern knew everyone who was worth knowing. When pupils left, he’d give

them the names of industry contacts and would spend night and day

helping them. He changed the lives of not only his own students but

future students when he came up with the idea of sending them on agency

placements.

Without him, who knows where the above would be now?
