The things that agencies will do to retain a piece of business fail
to surprise us any more, but we are impressed by those who show a bit of
imagination and risk offending the client they want to schmooze.
Anderson & Lembke was asked by Russell King, the business marketing
manager of Nynex, to introduce itself to the newly-merged Cable &
Wireless Communications, which Nynex is now part of.
Their new contact was Luke Broome, head of marketing - business
Instead of treating him to lunch at the Ivy, followed by a short
presentation, Anderson & Lembke did something rather different.
Playing on Broome’s first name, the agency came up with a Star Wars
It hired a full set of Star Wars costumes, packed the presentation into
a 5ft-long metal box, added a replica light sabre and hired a stretch
But there was something missing. The agency hunted out a 6ft actor to
play Darth Vader and stuck a BT logo on the back of his cape. Darth and
his attendant troopers stormed into C&W and guarded the box until Broome
arrived. Darth then terrorised Broome and the reception staff with his
resonant ’Use the force, Luke’ and ramblings about Broome and his band
of rebels ’never defeating the Empire’.
