All those people who persist in gossiping about whether Tim Ashton
is going to be taking a position with another advertising agency will be
relieved to hear that he has secured gainful employment.
Ashton renovated a cafe on Clapham Common in the summer and, following
his ’retirement’ from public life, has the opportunity to work there
full time. Despite the fantastic summer, which must have packed out the
venue, we couldn’t help but notice that he has remained a fairly
permanent fixture in and around Soho.
Situated on the Common, between the tennis courts and the bowling green,
Ashton runs the Bowling Green Cafe with three other investors; the
voiceover artist, Alistair McGowan, a chef, Simon Robertson, and an
Jack Dee was also interested initially but pulled out.
Now the peak season is over, the four have already planned several
special nights, starting with a fireworks spectacular. Although the caff
doesn’t have a drinks licence, people can bring their own wine and it’s
open for dinners and suppers (that’s enough of a plug, Ed).
Speaking from his country retreat in Shropshire (hard at work then,
Tim?) Ashton said: ’I have considered going into it full time, but I
found that once I’d dealt with the lunchtime rush it was a struggle to
get to Zilli’s much before 3pm. Anyway, the jacket potato machine has a
mind of its own.’
We can just see it now - the Bowling Green Cafe: Clapham, Tooting,
Streatham, Hackney - Ashton & Co will conquer the world with the awesome
weapons of cappuccino coffees and bagels.
