CAMPAIGN-I: Hollinger invests in TV news archive service

Hollinger Telegraph New Media made a major new media investment with the acquisition of a stake in the internet television news archive service, News-player.com.

Hollinger Telegraph New Media made a major new media investment

with the acquisition of a stake in the internet television news archive

service, News-player.com.

The investment comes as Newsplayer prepares for a flotation on the

Alternative Investment Market which is expected to value the company at

up to pounds 100 million.

A successful float would value Hollinger’s minority stake at pounds 5

million.

The deal will see Hugo Drayton, the managing director of HTNM, take a

seat on the board of Newsplayer and Newsplayer itself marketed via HTNM

properties which include the search engine UK Max and the Electronic

Telegraph.

The Electronic Telegraph will become the exclusive online news-site

partner for Newsplayer and visitors to the site will be able to access

some Newsplayer content directly from the site’s home page.

Newsplayer has the digital rights to the television and film news

archives belonging to Paramount, Reuters, ITN, Empire News, French

Pathe, Gaumont and Visnews.

Footage on the site ranges from the 1896 coronation of Tsar Nicholas II

to the present day.

The footage is delivered using streaming technology, but as the use of

broadband high-speed internet access becomes more widespread, interest

in the archive is likely to increase significantly.

Drayton said: ’We were immediately attracted to Newsplayer. It is a site

that characterises the exciting convergence between television and web

technology.

’Hollinger Telegraph is quickly building a portfolio of exciting new

economy assets and Newsplayer is set to become a cornerstone of that

strategy.’

At the launch in March, Newsplayer had a library of 10,000 news clips

available to internet users who pay an annual subscription charge of

pounds 25.

The deal comes on the back of recent announcements that HTNM’s holding

company, Hollinger, which owns the Telegraph Group, is considering the

idea of a merger with an internet company.
