CAMPAIGN-I: Private surf - Jeremy White, Campaign reporter, takes a look at

SURFBOT: Hello. My name is SURFBOT. What's your name?

Jeremy: Jeremy.

SURFBOT: What are you doing?

Jeremy: Well, I am looking at this website for the upcoming feature film

A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), the one Stanley Kubrick was working on

before he died, then Steven Spielberg took the reins.

SURFBOT: Tell me more.

Jeremy: OK. The site itself is in development and some sections are not

running just yet but it is still very good. What is radically different

about the way A.I. is being marketed online is that the campaign

consists of a network of sites - surreptitiously linked through a trail

of clues.

SURFBOT: That is interesting.

Jeremy: Don't get sarky, pal. Stay with me - it gets complicated. More

than 50 sites and 700 web pages have been created, all set in the year

2142, when robotic A.I. is common place. The sites deal with subjects

including robot emancipation, fictional corporations including a

university devoted to A.I. research and a special bureaux handling robot

crimes. Spielberg is thought to have ploughed more than pounds 625,000

into this intricate viral marketing campaign.

There are some wonderful touches to this maze of sites. There's so much

to find out and discover, just follow the links on the sites and you

will get hooked. You can also get clues for the puzzle, or just have

fun, talking to the "Bots" (computer programs designed to chat with you)

on the A.I. site. This is an intelligent, inventive viral campaign that

dares to think big and carries it off. A.I. has already got web geeks
