Chairing the Posters Jury this year was not exactly the most
arduous task I’ve ever undertaken. Campaign’s slick and unfussy
management of the judging process meant that my most demanding role over
the two days was making sure I was standing roughly in the middle of the
jury photograph.
The same cannot be said of my fellow jurors. They worked tirelessly in
the dark giving every single entry a carefully considered mark between 1
and 9. I tried to badger Campaign into publishing these scores on its
website. My feeling was that you’d want to know exactly what happened to
your agency’s work. The polite but firm no was probably based on a
justifiable fear of ugly recriminations. Maybe next year.
The results you can see are the ones in this report. They are a broad
and representative collection of the year’s best posters, with many
different concepts from many different agencies being rewarded.
You’ll also notice that, with two honourable exceptions, the jury was
made up entirely of creative people. We had late withdrawals from both
clients and members of the poster industry, which was a terrible
shame.
But, again to their great credit, even when the creative people were
left to their own devices they did not allow themselves to be enticed by
brilliant but irrelevant originality. The only kind of advertising
creativity that matters is the creativity that sells. And that’s what
you are about to see.
