A couple of tips for next year’s Chairman of the Jury:

the job’s a doddle.

Now, as many will readily assert, I find myself on the very threshold of

Old Fartdom, and I’m proud of it. So, naturally, I fret about the

decline in traditional print advertising crafts: copywriting,

typography, even basic layout skills.

To argue that we no longer need those things is like saying we can

dispense with the black notes on a piano. But as the following pages

will happily demonstrate, there are still some corners of our industry

where such crafts continue to flourish.

It’s also heartening to see that we haven’t just awarded ads that are

really Best Poster winners in disguise. (The quick visual hit is a very

seducing thing when you’re trawling through more than 2,000 entries, but

spare a thought for the well-argued copy ad. Our jurors did.)

That’s why I’m delighted that the Nurses work has triumphed this


The art direction is as cutting-edge as you like (and it’s beautifully

done). But, in the end, the campaign has a depth and considered

intelligence that marks it out.

My thanks to this year’s jury, who exhibited much depth, consideration

and intelligence.

While we’re at it, I’d like to propose a vote of thanks to Campaign.

Twenty-five years’ sterling service in the cause of promoting creativity

in print should not go unrecognised.
