CAMPAIGN SUPPLEMENT ON CRAIK JONES 1991-2001: DIARY - Watty's Angels face maternity cutbacks

It seems that the leading direct marketing agency Craik Jones Watson Mitchell Voelkel has been struck by a contagious outbreak of frantically ticking biological clock.

The agency's client service department is so female dominated that account handlers at Craik Jones are known as 'frocks' rather than 'suits'. A book has been opened on who is going to get engaged, married or pregnant next.

Perhaps more worrying for managing director David Watson were recent events that led to several of his closest colleagues falling pregnant at the same time.

Fiona Scott, the agency's deputy managing director, Watson's PA, Dee Markey, and new business colleague Claire Syrett will all be absent on maternity leave around the same time. The three were christened 'Watty's Angels' during their pregnancies as their growing importance to David became apparent.

Doubtless the agency will manage not to collapse completely but the strain has begun to show. An anonymous letter landed on the desk of the resident agony columnist in the in-house M40 magazine. 'Dear Fi, my staff are all pregnant,' it read. 'I really don't deserve this. I've motivated people, nurtured the creative product, driven profits. Why me?'

Judging from the answer, the women in client services should be worried.

'Breathe deeply and start making those alterations to the Craik Jones maternity leave policy,' is the advice.
