Capital gets a boost as breakfast show hangs on to top slot

LONDON - Global Radio's 95.8 Capital FM has overtaken sister station Heart to become London's second most popular radio station, boosted by the strong performance of its breakfast show hosted by Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon.

Capital had 1.95 million listeners in the second quarter of this year, an impressive 21.5 per cent rise on the same period last year and a rise of 4.5 per cent on the previous quarter, according to today's Rajar figures.

Vaughan and Snowdon’s London breakfast show proved most popular with 1.16 million listeners between 6am and 10am, up from 1.07 million in the previous quarter and 944,000 in the same period in 2008.

Bauer Radio’s Magic retained the top spot as London’s most popular commercial station in the second quarter of the year, with a 6.5 per cent share in the second quarter, up from 5.7 per cent in the first quarter of the year.

It had 2.05 million listeners in the second quarter of this year, up on two million in the same period last year.

Magic's Neil Fox fell from the top spot to second place in the rankings of London’s most popular commercial breakfast shows, with 858,000 listeners between 5.30am and 9am.

Global’s Heart saw listeners drop 3.7 per cent on the previous quarter but rise 6.9 per cent year on year to 1.9 million. The station’s breakfast show, presented by Jamie Theakston and Harriet Scott, fell from second to third place as it dropped 15,000 listeners, to 818,000.

Global Radio's talk station LBC 97.3 recorded its biggest audience for 14 years with a weekly reach of 787,000 on average, a rise of 11.6 per cent on the previous quarter and 32.5 per cent on the same period in 2008.

Another riser was Bauer's Kiss 100 FM, which saw its reach rise from 776,000 to 789,000 listeners, a rise of a 34 per cent year on year.
