Aside from heading Capital Advertising, Smith will also oversee the

She will be responsible for a staff of 130, and report to Paul Davies,

the Capital group’s commercial director. The new managing director told

Media Business that she is keen to try ’new ways of selling’ radio and

will announce the company’s new internet strategy in the next two

months.

’Capital has recently invested millions in its interactive division and

I will be working closely with Mark Frost, head of interactive, to

develop Capital’s role in the interactive marketplace and create a

strong link between the internet and other Capital products,’ said

Smith.

She continued: ’On arrival, I will put into action a 100-day, then a

one-year and three-year plan. While we must make sure that revenue

continues to come in, we need to concentrate on new ways of selling.

’Media owners are getting much smarter at building their USP’s and we

need to keep on being different.’

Smith also said that she wants to develop a closer relationship between

sales and departments like the business strategy unit, headed by Nikki

Mendonca. ’I want to use this pivotal unit to work much closer with

sales and agencies,’ she stated.

Davies said: ’Having worked with Smith at MSM, she was the only external

candidate I felt we should approach. With our business set to expand

further into the digital age, both through new radio services and an

enhanced internet presence, Linda will play a major part in building

upon the success we have already enjoyed.’

Capital Radio generates over 100 million in advertising revenue per

year, which accounts for 80 per cent of the group’s radio turnover.
