- Car manufacturers made up the single largest sector among more than 25 advertisers taking space in Sunday's launch issue of the UK's new weekly sports newspaper, Sport First. The paper achieved its target of a 75:25 ratio of editorial to advertising.
Vauxhall and Rover each took single pages in the two-section, 48-page paper, followed by half pages from Volkswagen and Peugeot. Land Rover took a sixth-page horizontal strip.
Courier and packages company DHL also took a full page and was the only advertiser to produce a topical theme. Its ad showed an angry Ian Wright above the caption "Ian. Now there's an even faster way to get a booking".
Other advertisers included Citizen watches, Air New Zealand, Centrum vitamin tablets, Psion, Lambretta clothing, Epson, Comet -- which advertised Sky dishes -- the Sports Cafe, NEC phones and Demon Internet. NatWest Mastercard, which advertised a promotion for tickets to the World Cup Finals, and Britannia Fund Managers were the only financial services advertisers.
Guinness, which used the line "Ireland's favourite drink", was the only alcohol advertiser.
