Carlton Communications has poached Rupert Miles, the head of
beeb.com, to take the newly created role of managing director of Carlton
Miles will assume responsibility for developing all of Carlton’s
new-media interests under the Interactive Media umbrella.
He will drive online and interactive media products, including Carlton
Online and its destination sites, and Carlton.com.
Miles will have a staff base of 75 employees across all of Carlton’s
new-media operations and he will take a seat on the Carlton Media Board
as part of his new role.
Carlton.com, a division of Carlton Online, is a one-stop internet hub
which drives access to the Online sites: simply food.co.uk;
popcorn.co.uk, and jamba.co.uk. Miles will take responsibility for
Carlton Online and for overseeing new launches under the Carlton Online
brand name, including internet products based on lifestyle,
entertainment and advertising.
Miles’ remit will also include responsibility for DHE, the internet
fulfilment business owned by Carlton which works with Blockbuster and
Odeon cinemas and is the UK’s largest distributor of packaged media for
mail-order companies including Freemans and Littlewoods.

During his time at beeb.com, Miles built the product into one of the
five most visited entertainment websites in the UK, with 400,000 users
and nine million page impressions a month. Before beeb.com, Miles was
publisher of the Radio Times.
Steven Cain, the chief executive of Carlton Communications, said Miles’
experience made him the right person for the job. ’We have great
ambitions for Carlton’s online and interactive business and Rupert has
the drive to take them forward,’ he added.
