The media group revealed a 7 per cent rise in turnover to just over £2 billion while headline pre-tax profits were up 8 per cent to £342.2 million.

In terms of its ITV advertising revenue it enjoyed an overall increase of 8.8 per cent to £692 million, with strong demand during the first nine months, which then fell off during Q4.

Carlton revealed that its joint digital TV venture with Granada, ONdigital, was close to signing up one million subscribers, but its loss on the business amounted to £143.2 million this year.

The company is in talks to sell its Tehnicolor filmprint operation which had a turnover of £1 billion.

Commenting on the results, Gerry Murphy, the chief executive of Carlton, said: "We're making progress on all fronts – expanding in ITV, driving ONdigital towards 1 million subscribers, growing our content and developing Technicolor's digital businesses."
