Rooney Carruthers, the executive creative director of Foote Cone &
Belding in San Francisco, is returning to the UK to direct for
Carruthers, who quit WCRS for FCB 18 months ago, said: "I've known Jo
(Godman, the founder and managing director of Godman) and the rest for
so long. I don't expect to be Frank Budgen or Jonathan Glazer in the
first year but I'm really looking forward to it."
Godman said: "I think he'll be an enormous asset. He's always nurtured
talent within his agency."
Carruthers left his UK post as the joint creative director of WCRS
alongside Leon Jaume in January last year. He was also partnered with
Larry Barker, now the creative director of BMP DDB, for several years.
At WCRS he produced mould-breaking campaigns for clients such as Orange,
Worthington, First Direct, Caffrey's and BMW.
Before joining WCRS with Barker in February 1993, Carruthers had created
campaigns including the Levi's "swimmer" commercial.
Godman said: "The agency background means that he's very used to the
collaboration you need as a director. It's a natural thing for him to
work with creative teams."
Vaughan Arnell, another director represented by Godman, added: "Rooney
knows his way round a script and he's done so many good campaigns. He
can add more than just a director because of his agency background. Ever
since I've known him he's always spoken about it."
He is the latest in a series of senior creatives to quit agency life for
directing. Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO's Tom Carty and Steve Hudson and
Lowe Lintas' Vince Squibb are among the others.
