ITV1's coverage of the Uefa Champions League match between Liverpool and Marseilles drew 4m viewers and an 18.5% share of the 7.30pm to 10pm audience.
The match, which resulted in Liverpool beating Marseille 2-1 thanks to two goals from Steven Gerrard, peaked at 5m viewers between 8.15pm and 8.30pm.
'The Secret Millionaire', which this week featured Gavin Wheeldon who runs a successful translation business, pulled in 3.6m viewers and a 16.4% share of the 9pm to 10pm audience.
Having roundly beaten ITV's 'Trinny and Susannah' over the summer with ratings of above 4m, the C4 programme was held back by the football.

Five's 'CSI Miami' crime drama series attracted 2.3m viewers and a 10.5% share of the 9pm to 10pm audience, beating BBC Two's new series of 'Horizon' which drew 1.3m viewers and a 5.8% share of the 9pm to 9.50pm audience.
Earlier in the evening, Channel 4's controversial 'The Sex Education Show' pulled in 2.2m viewers (9.7%), 400,000 less than its debut last week.
This week's episode saw presenter Anna Richardson putting herself through a full sexual health check and showing teenagers blown-up images of the most common STIs.
