In a survey of 11 listed marketing services groups, Chime delivered a 9 per cent rise in pre-tax profits distributed to shareholders, compared with the first half of 2008.

Chime made a post-tax profit of £5.8 million according to the survey, conducted by the financial research company Fintellect.

It showed that Chime, led by Lord Bell and the owner of the ad agency VCCP and PR company Bell Pottinger, was the only one of the 11 groups to grow both revenues and profits in the first half of the year.

The incentives company Motivcom took second place in the survey, while M&C Saatchi was placed third, despite suffering a 25 per cent drop in post-tax profit to £3.6 million.

Cello, the direct marketing group, was placed bottom after profits fell by 379 per cent.

Aegis was ranked next to bottom with profits down 107 per cent from £30 million to a £2.1 million loss.
