Clark takes charge of News International's freesheet

LONDON - News International has moved a step closer to the launch of a free London newspaper with the appointment of Ian Clark to head the project.

Clark, the ad director of Times Newspapers, has been appointed the general manager of the London freesheet, following News International registering the london paper as a potential name.

News International now has a senior team in place for the launch. Last month it hired Michael Craig, previously the global key account director at Metro International, to head the ad team on the title.

Stefano Hatfield, the former editor-in-chief of Metro in New York, has been working on the launch since his arrival at News International as the editorial director for new projects last September.

Publishers are currently bidding for a contract to distribute an afternoon London freesheet via the London Underground. But reports have suggested News International will press ahead with its launch, regardless of whether its bid is successful. Other distribution methods could include branded bins on pavements and in coffee shops.

News International had looked externally to fill the top management post at the London title before settling on Clark, who moves to his new role after a year at Times Newspapers. Clark was previously the commercial director at News International's News Group division, and has also worked on the agency side at BLM Media.

News International refused to comment.
