Co-op retail arm CWS is making a submission to the Independent

Television Commission calling for a ban on advertising unhealthy food to

children. The Co-op has committed itself to a voluntary ban following

its study into food and drink advertising during children’s viewing

periods. ITC deputy director of advertising Ian Blair confirmed the TV

regulator would consider the submission. - Marketing Week





Ed Aspel, marketing director of Thomson Holidays, is leaving the company

after a month in the post. Aspel is joining Mustard Entertainment

Restaurants as marketing and strategy planning director. Mustard is a

new company that last month acquired Brannigans bars from Candover. It

is headed by Aspel’s former colleague Stephen Evans. - Marketing





Volkswagen is poised to set up a luxury division - similar to Ford’s

Premier Automotive Group - to be headed by former BMW chief executive

Bernd Pischetsrieder. Pischetsrieder will manage a unit comprising Audi,

Lamborghini, Bugatti, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Pischetsrieder joined VW

at the start of this month after being sacked by BMW. He sits on VW’s

board as head of quality control and also has responsibility for the

Abbey National is piloting a local franchise scheme to give local banks

greater control over their marketing, and pave the way for the sale of

non-financial retail products in branches. The plans are designed to

encourage local managers to maximise profits and address the shortfall

in over-the-counter sales in local branches. - Marketing





Costa Coffee is working with creative agency Mother to design a range of

merchandise to be sold in coffee shops throughout the UK. Costa, owned

by Whitbread, is developing the products as it attempts to reposition

itself as an Italian-style chain. Costa plans to sell items such as

T-shirts and Babygros featuring Italian slogans. It may also sell items

such as piggy banks and no-smoking signs. - Marketing Week





Granada Sky Broadcasting has appointed commercial director Rob Ovens

acting chief executive, following the departure of Jeff Henry. Henry

left last week after two years at the helm. GSB refused to say whether

Ovens would become Henry’s permanent successor. Ovens has been GSB’s

commercial director, finance director and company secretary. He joined

LWT in 1983 as an accountant and, after Granada’s acquisition of the

station in 1994, he was promoted to director of finance. - Marketing





Marlboro Lights could be rebranded Marlboro Gold if the European Union

succeeds in banning taste descriptions on cigarette packaging. Industry

sources have indicated that Marlboro owner Philip Morris International

and UK distributor British American Tobacco are considering a name

change. Other leading brands that would have to be axed or renamed in

the event of a ban include Silk Cut Ultra and Camel Lights. - Marketing
