COI media roster set for rethink

Media agencies are gearing up to pitch for a place on the prized £167 million COI Communications media planning and buying roster as it also prepares to put its media business up for review.

COI has announced that the review will be held in stages, with the television and radio accounts the first to come up for pitch in February.

The press and cinema buying will follow in July, while the planning account will be reviewed in September.

The media buying tenders were last awarded in July 2000, when Starcom Mediavest retained the TV account - the largest part of the business - but lost the press buying to MediaCom. At the same time, OMD UK snatched the radio account from Carat, which at a stroke made it the UK's biggest radio buyer, while Universal McCann retained the cinema account.

Media planning is shared by eight roster agencies.
