Company announces availability of dot-TV domain names

A company that has exclusive rights to the dot-TV domain name, dotTV, has announced that it is now taking offers for rights to dot-TV domains.

Pasadena, Calif.-based dotTV, a unit of idealab!, acquired the rights to the .tv domain through an agreement with the government of Tuvalu, a small Pacific island nation. Tuvalu is also a significant minority shareholder in dotTV and has a seat on dotTV's board.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios has been among the first to acquire .tv internet addresses and has acquired eight domain names including MGM.tv, UnitedArtist.tv, JamesBond.tv, 007.tv, PinkPanther.tv and StargateSG1.tv.

"The word TV is, in and of itself, a world-recognized brand, so why not take it to the next level by combining it with an internet address to create its own niche in the new media world?" an MGM spokesperson said Monday. "Everything a has a dot-com name right now, and this would be something that hopefully stands little a bit apart."

Lou Kerner, chief executive of dotTV, said: "DotTV combines the power of 'TV,' the most widely recognized two-letter symbol in the world, with the internet. When you marry the 'dot' with 'TV' you create something meaningful on the internet. Judging from the enthusiasm of our registrants thus far, consumers will soon associate .tv names with the bold, rich and engaging content that is the future of the global internet."

Inquiries can be made immediately at dotTV's web site, www.tv.
