The event, which encourages people worldwide to switch off non-essential lights for one hour to show their commitment to the planet, will kick off with singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor revealing a huge light switch at Jubilee Gardens on London’s Southbank to launch the countdown to the evening switch-off.
Later in the evening she will perform an exclusive set by candelight at London’s Southbank Centre, which will be live-streamed over the internet. Dougie Poynter of music group McFly will countdown to Earth Hour and switch off the lights for the performance.
Other activity will include a panda flash mob, involving 60 individuals dressed as pandas, who will take to the streets of London offering free panda ‘selfies'.
A number of UK venues will be showing their support for Earth Hour by switching off their lights. This includes Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, the EDF Energy London Eye, the Piccadilly Lights, Edinburgh Castle, Brighton Pier, Durham Cathedral and Windsor Castle.
Wales will be celebrating the occasion with the creation of a large #welshwish LED candle image outside the Senedd, Cardiff Bay, as the lights go out. A ‘pledge tree’ to help the environment, as well as creative recycling exhibits will go on display at science and discovery centre Techniquest.
Shareen Brown, Earth Hour manager at WWF-UK, said: "The countdown has well and truly begun as millions of people prepare to join the Earth Hour celebrations. From Samoa to Tahiti, and everywhere in between, it’s really inspiring to see that so many people want to take action to protect our beautiful planet.
"Last year ten million people took part in the UK and 82% of those that signed up said they felt inspired to go on to live more sustainably beyond the hour. Globally we also saw the world’s first Earth Hour forest created in Uganda and more than 100,000 people supported a petition on forest legislation in Russia."Comment below to let us know what you think.
