Andrew Cracknell, the chairman and executive creative director of

Ammirati Puris Lintas, is handing over the running of the agency’s

creative department to Nick Welch, who is currently a creative director

at APL.

Welch, 44, takes on Cracknell’s executive creative director title and

will be wholly responsible for the day-to-day management of the

department.

The move follows the departure of Welch’s partner of 14 years, Billy

Mawhinney, who joined Ogilvy and Mather this week (Campaign, 21

February).

Welch will be supported by Peter Harold, APL’s head of art. Both Welch

and Harold will join the agency’s management executive.

Cracknell said: ’I am not moving away from the work but if I take a

one-step-back view, I will be more able to do something long term about

the quality, consistency and output of the work.’

He added: ’This is a big agency and with me spending a considerable

amount of time on issues not directly concerned with the creative work,

the department needs a full-time champion.’

Welch said: ’I shall be focusing on getting the very best creative work

out of everyone. Because I don’t have to take an agency view, I am able

to be single-minded and to defend the work both internally and

externally.’

Welch started in the business in 1972 as a copywriter for J. Walter

Thompson.
