Dazed donates for Africa issue

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the first free democratic election in South Africa, Dazed and Confused magazine will dedicate its entire next issue and a share of profits on projects for the country, reports Palle Hansen.

The magazine will contain specially commissioned editorial features from political, social and economic leaders from Western governments and international organisations commenting upon various issues facing the continent.

Content will also focus on the plight of AIDS sufferers in Africa and more generally on the developed world’s relationship with, and responsibilities towards the continent of Africa.

The Dazed and Confused issue marks a UK first that sees 10% of the issue’s advertising revenue donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation for use on the African Solutions to African Problems project.

The magazines largest print run ever will be backed at retailers in the UK. The publishers have reduced the price by 50 per cent in South Africa to bring it in line with local publications and are expecting a massive increase in circulation.

The magazine will contain inserted postcards for the readers to send back which will call for increased funding for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

A national campaign will make postcards available in leading bars and cafes and it will be supported by an on-line campaign as well.

The campaign will be supported and endorsed by a long list of celebrities who have already signed and sent postcards in support of the lobby.

Nicki Bidder, editor-in-chief, said: “This issue will enable our readers to get involved in changing the plight of many of their peers in Africa by signing a postcard thereby adding their names to a petition which calls for a vaccine for AIDS”

Exclusive magazine content is to be shared with newsprint partners and magazines in the UK, South Africa and internationally.

The issue will be available on June 17.
