ABC chief executive Simon Devitt has quit the organisation to join

the growing ranks of internet entrepreneurs.

Devitt joined the ABC in 1998 from VNU where he had climbed the sales

ladder to become a publishing director of the Dutch company’s business

and finance portfolio. He said he had ’always intended to stay longer

than two years’, but that ’a great opportunity’ had presented

itself.

He would not reveal the nature of his new business, except to say that

it is a business-to-business venture.

ABC chairman John Mayhead will take on a caretaker role at the

organisation until a successor is found.

Devitt said of the ABC: ’I think it’s in a better position than when I

started. We’ve got a great team in place at the top of the organisation,

and it’s now commercially stronger, which means the big publishers can’t

push us around.’
