’I was supposed to be flying out to Northern Ireland with my boss Bill

Kinlay - then Ogilvy & Mather’s press and radio buying director - to

give a presentation to Ford dealers. It was also the end of my

three-month trial period, so I was going to be having my assessment the

next day.

’I agreed to meet Bill at Heathrow at 7.30am, so imagine my horror when

I opened my eyes to see the clock reading 7.29. I jumped straight into a

cab, unshaven and hair all over the place.

’I tried to phone Bill but could not get through. I then spent 20

minutes pleading with the driver to call base and get them to put a page

out on the airport tannoy.

’To make matters worse, I had all the documents for the presentation, so

I was almost in tears by the time we reached the airport, and Bill had a

look on his face that said ’you’re fired’. Then all of a sudden he burst

out laughing. In the end, the whole presentation went without a hitch.’
