Angie Lopez strolled confidently into a certain media agency, her
spiel on banner advertising honed to perfection. The receptionist
pointed her towards the office where she was due to give her
presentation.
She knocked on the door, walked in, and handed a business card to the
man who greeted her. He apologised for not having a card of his own, but
asked her to take a seat. So she got out her laptop, cleared her throat,
and began.
She recalls: ’The presentation was about the benefits of banner ads. It
took an hour and a half.’
At the end, the man seemed impressed. Lopez asked him if he was
interested in joining forces with Lycos. ’It’s not really my decision,’
he said. ’I’m not into online stuff.’
Lopez was confused. ’You’re not the head of digital media, then?’
’No, sorry. You want the bloke down the hall.’ Looking back, Lopez can
understand why he didn’t tell her in the first place. ’My presentation
must have been too enthralling.’
