For someone who used to work on a car magazine, Hello!’s commercial
director Charlotte Stockting has a diabolical sense of direction.
’My lack of bearings is legendary,’ admits Stockting. ’My colleagues are
always taking the piss - they reckon I could get lost in my own
’When I became advertisement manager for Auto Express, one of our major
clients was Renault. Its office was way out in north London, I think it
was up by Gillette Corner.’ (Er, surely that’s about as west as it gets?
’Anyway, every time I arranged a meeting with Renault I would convince
myself that this time I definitely knew the way to its office. However,
on each occasion I got lost and ended up having to phone my Auto Express
colleagues for directions.
’This was in the days before mobile phones, so my journey always
consisted of a whistle-stop tour of the phone booths of north London. I
was usually at least 45 minutes late for any meeting, and sometimes I
never made it at all.
’Renault advertising was certainly a bit thin on the ground for my first
