DIARY: Divine influence pairs D'Arcy against Burnett

Somebody up above has a wicked sense of humour. How else to explain the semi-final draw for the latest debating competition for the 44 Club?

For who should fate have pitted against each other for a place in the final but D'Arcy, about to be given the coup de grace by its Publicis Groupe parent, and Leo Burnett, which will gobble it up.

The motion? "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Nothing to do with D'Arcy's pitch conversion rate, apparently, just a topic picked at random to help adland's young guns polish up their intellectual prowess.

A chance for D'Arcy to bow out with guns blazing, perhaps.
